The Aizu region of Fukushima Prefecture is one of the great brewing regions of Japan, with Aizu-Wakamatsu as its center. Here Nagurayama Brewing Company makes sakes in the classic Fukushima style—richly aromatic with flavor amplitude to match. The brewery’s president, Takeo Matsumoto, led the movement to elevate the quality of the region’s sakes, and today Fukushima wins more gold awards at the Japan National Sake Appraisal than any other prefecture.
